Ignatius Rising

Cowritten (under the name Deborah George Hardy) with Rene Pol Nevils, Ignatius Rising is the tragic and bizarre story of John Kennedy Toole, a New Orleans native and aspiring writer. Toole's tortured relationship with his mother yielded the material for his satirical novel, A Confederacy of Dunces.

Ultimately depressed, overweight, hard-drinking, promiscuous, and mad, Toole committed suicide. After his mother found the manuscript and published it posthumously, it sold more than 1.5 million copies in 18 languages and won the Pulitzer Prize for ficiton.

Based on numerous interviews, as well as unpublished letters, documents, and photos, Ignatius Rising explores the life and mind of Toole. In its third printing, Ignatius Rising was on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list and has been optioned by Paramount Studios. It also received FOREWORD's bronze award for nonfiction, 2001.
